Bulgaria and Romania are EU Member States but will join the Schengen zone only in March 2024. Two more countries to travel, stay, live or work freely if you own the qualifying document to do that.
What is the Schengen Zone?
The Schengen Zone comprises 26 European countries that have abolished passports and other types of border control at their mutual borders. Travellers can move freely within the Schengen Zone without internal border checks, making it easier to travel between member states. What are the rights of the residents of the Schengen Zone?

- Residence Rights: Residents have the right to live and work in any Schengen country without needing a visa or residence permit as long as they are citizens or legal residents of a Schengen member state.
- Access to Services: Residents have access to various services, such as healthcare, education, and social welfare, in any Schengen country where they reside, similar to citizens of that country.

Currently, the Schengen zone consists of 26 European countries (of which 22 are EU states): Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania will join in March 2024.
