Residence Permits and the Freedom of Travel Obtaining a second residence status in another country may help you not only to reside abroad but also to travel more comfortable, even without getting the necessary entry visas. What is a residence permit? "A residence permit (less commonly residency permit) is a document or card required in some regions, allowing a foreign national to reside in a country for a fixed or indefinite length of time. These may be permits for temporary residency or permanent residency", according to Wikipedia. What is the difference between an entry visa and a residence permit? The entry visa allows you to enter and stay a short period in one or several countries. The residence permit will enable you to reside in one state, which can be temporary or permanent residence status. How can you use residence permits to travel? There are residence permits, which allow you to visit or even stay in various jurisdictions. Some of our clients from developing countries (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc.) are looking for residence permits in the Schengen zone. The Schengen area covers 26 European countries ("Schengen States") states without border controls between them. As a holder of the residence permit of a Schengen zone member state, you can travel and stay in the other countries in the area. The residence permit will not let you work in other Schengen states (this issue is changing currently), but at least you can conduct business during your stay up to three or six months in the other European countries. However, not only the Schengen zone allows you to travel and stay with your residence permit instead of using your passport. There are ones or economical-political areas, where you can use the residence permit of one country to travel in the others, such the ECOWAS and the MERCOSUR areas. What is a residency by investment programme? The most simple and fastest way of obtaining a residency permit is to participate in a residency by investment programme. These schemes were created for wealthy applicants, who can obtain their right to live in a country through several options, depending on the country:
  • contribution/donation
  • bank deposit
  • paying flat tax
  • purchasing real estate or property
  • investing in government bonds, etc.
